With Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook Out, it’s Perry Jones to the Rescue for Thunder

While all of this is nice. The Thunder can’t win without Durant and Westbrook and Jones scored 32 points because someone on that team needs to score 30 points. This is not sustainable for them but it seems that Jones will have plenty of time to prove me wrong and establish himself as the next star scorer on the Thunder.

The Oklahoma City Thunder came into Clippers’ home opener with their superstar, Kevin Durant, incapacitated by a foot injury. Their second superstar, Russell Westbrook, prepared for the game willingly consumed in his music with his legs soaked in ice water. He leaves the game after eight minutes with a fractured hand and now all is lost with the Thunder.

Perry Jones to the rescue!

Someone on the Thunder had to be the guy to score 30 points and Jones took it upon himself to be the next main score with 32 points while playing 41:42 minutes, the most among his team. No one else on the Thunder scored 20 points and only two other scored double digit points, which lead to them losing to the Clippers 93-90.

“My teammates were being in my head,” Jones said, “especially Kevin [Durant] — telling me to be aggressive, telling me that my team needed somebody to step up and be aggressive, and that’s what I tried to do.”

This was a surprise to everyone but Clippers head coach Doc Rivers who understand Jones’ true potential that was initially thrown to the wayside due to injuries in college.

“People forget if Perry Jones doesn’t get a bad medical report, he would’ve been a top five pick,” Rivers said. “They took a gamble on his health, and he’s healthy now, so he’s playing well.”

Kendrick Perkins looks at Jones scoring right in front of him and sees déjà vu. He sees Jones now and thinks Rajon Rondo breaking out in 2009.

“We had different guys come about to step their game up,” Perkins said. “That’s when Rondo really started taking his game to another level. I thought Perry came out. He was more aggressive.”
