JT Riddle, Lewis Brinson homer as Marlins dominate Mets 8-2

One day after suggesting to temper expectations going into Sandy Alcantara’s first big league start, Miami Marlins manager Don Mattingly said, “It’s exciting to see Sandy get started.”

The rookie gave the people what they wanted by allowing three hits and only one earned run with two strikeouts over five innings as the Marlins dominated the Mets 8-2 for his first career win in the Majors.

“It was super emotional because I came in with the Cardinals (last season) as a reliever,” Alcantara said. “Me and JT (Realmuto) were working together to throw a two-seam (fastball) into the count to get a ground ball and a quick out.”

“For the first one we kind of have a baseline,” Mattingly said, “so we get to see where it goes.A little bit wild, a little bit of trouble with the strike zone, but being able to get through five – he’s still a work in progress.”

Part of that wildness for Alcantara came in the second inning. After allowing a base hit from Todd Fraizer and walking Amed Rosario, Marlins catcher JT Realmuto picked off Fraizer at first base to end the inning and maintain a scoreless tie, exciting Alcantara in the process.

“I said, ‘Oh my god, he’s out?’ I didn’t think he was out but that’s OK,” Alcantara said. “If the umpire called ‘out,’ he’s out.”

“It’s one of the reasons why he’s the best catcher in all of baseball,” Marlins shortstop JT Riddle said of Realmuto’s pickoff. “To do stuff like that, a lot of people don’t do that and for a catcher to be able to do that defensively plus the way he swings the bat, it’s very good.”

Since then, he was rewarded with a six-run third inning by the Marlins which chased Mets starter Corey Oswalt. It was the first time both rookie pitchers made their first career starts in the same game since August 21, 2015, when Kendry Flores toed the rubber for the Marlins against Jared Eickhoff and the Philadelphia Phillies.

The scoring barrage began with Lewis Brinson hitting a solo home run for his tenth of the season. After Realmuto and Starlin Castro each drove in runs on RBI singles, Riddle hit a three run homer to lock in the win.

“JT able to hit that just kind of breaks it open from there and we’re in pretty good shape,” Mattingly said.

The Mets and Marlins are fighting for fourth place in the National League East and to stave off the dishonor of having the worst record in the league. Miami now has one more win then New York.
