Logan Thomas might start at QB vs. 49ers
TEMPE, Ariz. – Logan Thomas might be the Cardinals’ starting quarterback when Arizona heads to Santa Clara, Calif., on Sunday to take on the San Francisco 49ers in the regular season finale.
Head coach Bruce Arians says it’s in no way a reflection in the way Ryan Lindley played on Sunday night against the Seattle Seahawks. Arians just wants to see what Thomas can do at the quarterback position.
“I do trust Ryan [Lindley],” Arians said. “I think he proved that the stadium wasn’t too big for him. He just missed some throws.”
“This isn’t for the NFC West title, [but] it could be, that’s why I have a quick hook,” Arians said. “He [Thomas] had a real good week of practice in the package we had for him.”
“I need to find some things out about him [Thomas] before we get any further into this season,” Arians said.
Arians mentioned having a quick hook if Thomas is the starter. Arians says he won’t hesitate for a second to pull Thomas and put Lindley back in if he sees things going south.
“That’s my job, to make sure we cover every base,” Arians said.
Arians sees some differences in Thomas’ game and Lindley’s game that might give Thomas a slight advantage.
“He [Thomas] has mobility. Not that we design runs for him, but he does have mobility. He’s got a very strong arm,” Arians said. “The few times he’s had an opportunity – Denver [Broncos game on Oct. 5] wasn’t quite fair because he got no snaps. I want to see him with a full week of practice and getting the reps and see how he does.”
As far as Drew Stanton is concerned, Arians says there’s no way he plays against the 49ers, unless it’s a last resort. Arians is optimistic that Stanton returns for the playoffs though.
Stanton had a bit of swelling in his knee, which set him back a bit and most likely kept him out of Sunday night’s game with Seattle. Arians had no doubt that Stanton would’ve tried to play in that game if given the opportunity.
Arians says Stanton will get some work in practice this week and hopefully won’t have another setback, as the team gets closer to the playoffs.
