Ketel Marte’s walk-off leads D-Backs to 4-3 victory over Rockies
PHOENIX—Ketel Marte hit a walk-off single as the Diamondbacks beat the Rockies 4-3 Sunday afternoon at Chase Field.
Chris Owings mashed a two-run homerun to left in the bottom of the fourth inning and Brandon Drury came up clutch to help pace the offense before Marte’s big hit.
The homer came on a first-pitch changeup from Rockies starter German Marquez.
Arizona starter Taijuan Walker lasted seven innings, allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits, walking one and striking out eight.
The scoring began in the top of the fourth. Ian Desmond walked, and Trevor Story drove him in with a single to center.
Top of the fifth, game humming along. In the blink of an eye, Charlie Blackmon, DJ LaMahieu, and Nolan Arenado all singled. LaMehieu’s single scored Blackmon and the game was tied at two apiece.
In the bottom of the sixth, Arizona had two runners on after Jake Lamb advanced to second after the throw to first by Arenado was ruled an error on his ground ball. Owings walked. Drury was up with two out, and he doubled to left, allowing Lamb to score. Boy, was Drury fired up after that hit.
Rubby De La Rosa came in to relieve Walker in the top of the eighth inning. RDLR forced a groundout and struck out one over 2/3 of an inning. Jorge De La Rosa came in to pitch for the last out of the top of the eighth. JDLR allowed a single to Pat Valaika and then forced a fly ball from Raimel Tapia to end the inning.
Fernando Rodney relieved JDLR in the top of the ninth. Rodney hasn’t allowed a run since May 1. Rodney began the ninth by forcing a fly ball from Trevor Story, working out of a 3-0 count. Rodney then surrendered a base hit to Ryan Hanigan, his first since May 26 against the Brewers. Rodney then gave up a second hit, to pinch-hitter Tony Wolters. Blackmon was up next and got ahead of the count, 2-0. Blackmon singled to left to drive in the tying run. Lamahieu and Arenado flew out to right to end the inning.
Adam Ottavino pitched for Colorado in the bottom of the ninth. Owings and Drury led off, the two players responsible for the three runs scored up to that point. Owings grounded out. Drury singled to right, with Chris Iannetta at the plate next. Iannetta already has one walk-off homer this year. Iannetta doubled, sending Drury to third, putting Ketel Marte in the driver’s seat to deliver the game-winning hit. Chris Rusin came in to face Marte. 1-2 pitch, Marte, BANG!
