Dansby Swanson taking time to “live in the moment”
PHOENIX — If you’re the Arizona Diamondbacks, this is what you want to hear coming out of the mouth of your No. 1 draft pick, Dansby Swanson:
“I have a lot of belief in myself that one day I can be one of the better players in this league,” Swanson said.
Swanson wasn’t the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 MLB Draft out of pure luck; Arizona chose him because they felt he was the best player in college baseball, and he could eventually be a fixture in their everyday lineup.
If Swanson could be a fixture for the next decade or so, then that would be icing on the cake for him and the Diamondbacks; but he’s not thinking that far ahead. He’s got too much to take care of in the interim.
“Just thinking about 6 or 10 years is crazy,” Swanson said. “What (Vanderbilt head) coach (Tim) Corbin preached to us at Vanderbilt, and I’m sure they do here, is just live in the moment, and take it as it comes. That’s what I’m doing, and that’s what I’m looking forward to.”
Swanson says “it’s an awesome experience” getting drafted by the Diamondbacks, finishing up the College World Series, and actually being in Arizona with the team and meeting his big brothers. Plus, he’s only 21-years-old while all this is going on!
“I’ve talked to my family and friends about this a lot, and it’s actually kind of funny, just because they’re like, ‘(You) still haven’t even graduated school yet, and you’re out doing incredible things,'” Swanson said. “It’s something I’ve dreamed about ever since I was a little kid, (and) now it’s finally here, so I’m going to be able to take it in, bit by bit.”
“I think my goal for me is to be the best that I can be, because that’s what I can control,” Swanson said. “You can’t really control the external factors, so for me, just go out there and be the best I can be, not only as a player, but as a person as well.”
