D-Backs name Varsho and Green MiLB Player and Pitcher of the Year
The Arizona Diamondbacks named catcher Dalton Varsho their Minor League Player of the Year and Josh Green Pitcher of the Year.
The two were welcomed to Chase Field on Friday and received their awards while the Diamondbacks played the San Diego Padres.
Both Varsho and Green finished the season at Double-A Jackson, leading the Generals to the Southern League championship. The 23-year-old catcher batted .301 with an .898 OPS, 18 home runs and 58 RBI. The 24-year-old pitcher went 11-5 with a 2.71 ERA and 101 strikeouts in 22 starts between Jackson and Single-A Visalia.
Varsho is ranked No. 3 among catchers by Baseball America and No. 5 in that same position group by MLB Pipeline. He is the first catcher to be awarded MiLB POY in franchise history.
Green was drafted by the Diamondbacks last year in the 14th round. MLB Pipeline has him rated as Arizona’s 21st ranked prospect and Baseball America has him at No. 19.
