Cardinals pickup fifth-year option on WR Michael Floyd
GLENDALE, Ariz. – Cardinals wide receiver Michael Floyd is heading into the final year of the four-year contract he signed after Arizona drafted him back in 2012. He was set to become an unrestricted free agent after the season, so the Cardinals had to decide before May 3 on whether or not to pick up the fifth-year option on Floyd, which they did on Wednesday, keeping him under contract through the 2016 season.
“We determined that exercising the fifth year was the best option that clearly made the most sense,” Cardinals general manager Steve Keim told Darren Urban from azcardinals.com. “Michael has shown a lot of good things in his time with us and we fully expect him to make a step forward this season. We have high expectations for him on and off the field and look forward to him delivering for us.”
Floyd will make $1,749,750 this season. With a $1,423,000 signing bonus, Floyd’s cap hit this season will be $3,172,750. His salary for 2016 will be $7,320,000, and it’s guaranteed for injury only. The injury guarantee would only come into effect if Floyd is unable to play next season after getting hurt. The option year becomes fully guaranteed on the first day of the league year in the fifth contract year, which is approximately March 8, 2016 for Floyd and the rest of the 2012 draft class.
Floyd’s numbers last season [47 catches, 841 yards, six touchdowns] dropped a bit from the numbers he put up in 2013, when he caught 65 passes for 1,041 yards and five touchdowns. Head coach Bruce Arians felt Floyd was a “victim” of the quarterback situation last season, with Arizona going through four different signal callers throughout the course of the year.
“I think some frustration went into his play at times, but he still needs to hit a consistency level,” Arians said. “He’s a 1,000 yard player every year. He should’ve had 1,000 easily last year, but there were some balls that we expect him to come down with in the end zone that he didn’t come down with last year. That’s what’s holding him back from being elite. He’s proven what he can do to make big plays for us.”
Floyd will return to a wide receiving corps that features Larry Fitzgerald [who will also be a free agent after the 2016 season], John Brown, Jaron Brown and Brittan Golden.
